MEYLE highlights how winter vehicle checks can create opportunities for filter maintenance

Every autumn, millions of vehicles roll into workshops for their winter vehicle checks and winter tyre changeover. Bonnets rarely come up at the same time. According to MEYLE, that’s a missed opportunity – for workshops and for vehicle health – and one that’s becoming more costly to ignore as filtration demands rise with the season.

The summer season puts filters under more pressure than most drivers realise. Road trips to coastal or rural areas expose cabin, engine and fuel filters to a heavier load of airborne particles than everyday commuting, leaving many components already closer to their service limit by the time autumn arrives.

What follows compounds the problem. Autumn and winter bring higher moisture, road salt, dirt and airborne contaminants – conditions that accelerate saturation in cabin air filters (leaves, pollen residue, road dust), risk restricting airflow in engine air filters already near their limit and raise the stakes for fuel filters tasked with keeping water and contaminants out of sensitive fuel system components. Short journeys and stop-start traffic add further strain across the board.

Yet filter replacement is frequently skipped at exactly this point. A common assumption is that cooler months bring less airborne pollution than spring’s pollen season and this leads some workshops and motorists to deprioritise the check, even as real-world conditions argue the opposite.

MEYLE is encouraging workshops to treat the seasonal changeover as a natural trigger for a broader inspection. Alongside things like winter tyre changes, MEYLE explains checking brake discs and pads ahead of icy roads and longer stopping distances, inspecting control arms and suspension for corrosion that road salt will only accelerate, and assessing all three key filters – cabin air, engine air and fuel – for saturation, leakage or damage.

The payoff for drivers is concrete. A saturated cabin air filter can bring unpleasant odours, reduced air quality and slower demisting – a real visibility issue as the nights draw in. A clogged engine air filter can compromise the airflow combustion depends on, while a tired fuel filter leaves fuel system components more exposed to contaminants. Warning signs to watch for include rising fuel consumption, irregular engine running and misted-up windscreens – any of which can justify early replacement rather than waiting for the scheduled interval.

For workshops, the seasonal change offers a chance to consolidate several maintenance items into a single visit.
