The UK’s car parc is bigger and older than ever before, creating a pivotal moment for the automotive aftermarket as it steps up to keep the nation moving affordably in a rapidly changing market.
With more than 42.5 million vehicles now on UK roads and the average car approaching 10 years old, the sector is facing a uniquely complex landscape defined by ageing vehicles, evolving technologies and shifting consumer behaviour. Almost half of all cars are now more than a decade old, while electric vehicle adoption continues to accelerate, with more than two million EVs already on UK roads.
As households continue to feel the impact of the cost-of-living crisis, the role of the aftermarket has never been more critical. Research shows that 72% of motorists are actively seeking more affordable maintenance and repair options, underlining the essential role of independent garages and motor factors in keeping vehicles on the road safely and cost-effectively.
The UK automotive aftermarket, which employs 339,000 people, is adapting quickly to this new reality. A more diverse vehicle parc – spanning older internal combustion engine vehicles through to the latest electric models – is driving demand for broader expertise, new technologies and ongoing investment in training and skills.
At the same time, the industry is addressing a well-documented skills challenge, with more than 70% of repair professionals identifying a shortage of talent as a growing issue. As vehicles become more advanced, the sector is evolving to combine traditional mechanical expertise with cutting-edge capabilities in areas such as diagnostics, electrification and digital tools.
It is against this backdrop that GSF Car Parts is hosting TechFest in Newcastle on 28th May, bringing together garages, suppliers and industry leaders to explore how the aftermarket continues to adapt and thrive.
Steve Horne, CEO of GSF Car Parts, said: “The UK car parc is changing faster than at any point in recent history – it’s bigger, it’s older, and it’s more complex. But this is an industry that has never stood still.
“At GSF, we’re actively stepping up to support garages through this period of change. We’re expanding our range to meet the growing presence of new manufacturers, including Chinese vehicle brands, while continuing to invest in the parts and support needed for an increasingly diverse car parc.
Through our national garage network, Servicesure, we’re helping workshops adapt to shifting ownership patterns, including the rise in fleet, while also investing in technical training for electrification and new vehicle technologies. Just as importantly, we’re bringing garages together – building a stronger sense of community and collaboration so businesses can share knowledge, raise standards and grow with confidence
“At a time when motorists are looking for value and reliability more than ever, our sector is the one that keeps motoring accessible. Behind every vehicle on the road is a network of skilled people doing the job properly and keeping standards high.
“TechFest is about recognising that expertise, sharing ideas and inspiring the next generation. This is an industry to be proud of and my message to everyone in it is simple: do yourself proud.”
TechFest will showcase the latest innovations shaping the sector, from electric vehicle servicing and advanced diagnostics through to training, recruitment and business growth, reinforcing the aftermarket’s role as a vital and future-focused part of the UK economy.
