Arnold Clark Autoparts urges motorists to check coolant levels

Arnold Clark Autoparts is encouraging motorists to check their vehicle’s coolant levels as temperatures rise, reinforcing the importance of coolant in preventing engine overheating and avoiding costly breakdowns during the summer months.

While many drivers associate coolant with winter driving, it’s equally important during periods of hot weather. Coolant helps regulate engine temperature by absorbing excess heat and preventing the cooling system from overheating, making it a vital part of vehicle maintenance throughout the year.

Hot weather can place additional strain on a vehicle’s cooling system, increasing the risk of overheating if coolant levels are low or the system is not properly maintained.

Craig McCracken, Group Factor Manager at Arnold Clark Autoparts, commented: “Many motorists assume coolant is only important during the winter but in reality, it plays a crucial role all year round. During warmer weather, engines work overtime to maintain a safe operating temperature and coolant helps prevent it from overheating. A simple coolant check can take just a few minutes and could help drivers avoid unexpected breakdowns, costly repairs and disruption to summer travel plans.”

Motorists are advised to inspect coolant levels on a regular basis, particularly before long journeys or during periods of sustained warm weather. Most modern vehicles feature a coolant reservoir marked with minimum and maximum indicators, allowing drivers to quickly identify whether a top-up is required.

Drivers should only check coolant levels when the engine is completely cool and should always use the manufacturer-recommended coolant type when topping up. Using the correct coolant mixture is not only important for temperature regulation but for protecting the cooling system from corrosion and wear.

Warning signs of coolant-related issues can include an engine temperature warning light, rising temperature gauge readings, steam from under the bonnet or a sweet-smelling odour from the engine bay. If a vehicle begins to overheat, drivers should stop safely and allow the engine to cool before investigating further.

Arnold Clark Autoparts stocks a wide range of coolant and antifreeze products suitable for a variety of vehicle makes and models, helping motorists maintain their vehicles throughout the summer.

McCracken added: “Preventative maintenance will always be more cost-effective than being confronted with a breakdown. Checking coolant levels before setting off can give drivers greater peace of mind, helping keep their vehicles running efficiently during the warmer months.”
