The FIA World Endurance Championship season draws to a close this weekend with the return of the 6 Hours of Monza, where the current specification of Goodyear Racing Eagle LMGT3 tires will race for the final time.
The Milan-area circuit has featured in WEC before, but never in the LMGT3 era. Its November date will produce considerably cooler temperatures than when Goodyear and WEC last visited ‘The Temple Of Speed’ in July 2023, too.
As such, the Goodyear Racing Eagle Medium tires which are designed for fast warmup will help give drivers – both professional and amateur – the confidence to push straight out of the pit lane, even in colder conditions.
The track’s combination of long straights and tight chicanes is reminiscent of Le Mans, while Goodyear’s engineers have drawn on experiences at Spa-Francorchamps and Silverstone to prepare for the cooler weather conditions. Every LMGT3 team will work with its designated Goodyear track support engineer who advises on setup and strategy throughout the race weekend.
As at last month’s 6 Hours of Barcelona, teams are expected to favour single-stint strategies with their tires this weekend. In the event of rain, the wide transition window of both the slick and wet tires can allow for interesting strategy calls on a drying track.
This weekend not only marks the close of the third season of LMGT3 competition in WEC, but also the final appearance of the current Goodyear Racing Eagle slick and wet tires. Starting next season, LMGT3 cars in WEC and the European Le Mans Series will run new specification tires that are made up of 66% sustainable material1.
“Monza presents an interesting challenge to round out a competitive WEC season, particularly with the cooler conditions we expect at this time of year,” said Stephen Bickley, Goodyear Endurance Program Manager. “Getting tires up to temperature quickly will be important, but the fast warmup characteristics of our Goodyear Racing Eagle Medium should give drivers the confidence they need from the start of each stint.
“This weekend is a significant milestone for Goodyear as we conclude three seasons with our current LMGT3 tire specification. After last month’s 6 Hours of Barcelona, teams have started testing our new tires, which we’re looking forward to seeing in racing action next year.”
Across the Atlantic, Goodyear Racing Eagles are also in action this weekend in the NASCAR Championship Races at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series also draws to a close next weekend at Pomona Dragstrip.
